When it comes to being a freelancer, there are many things you can take a “break” from and take the pressure off your shoulders, as it is a much more flexible and less rigid way of working than the traditional one. However, résumé writing is not one of these.
Your résumé is, in some way, your proper introduction to any company that is interested in hiring you, so it is vitally important that both its visual character and the information present in it are perfectly arranged in the best and most innovative way to ensure success in any recruitment process.
How To Write The Perfect Resume?
One of the things we enjoy doing the most here at Freelance Latin America is providing information to help experienced freelancers and those starting to build a place in this business. We offer them tips to guide them on the path to success.
If you want to capture a recruiter’s attention quickly and efficiently, we invite you to follow this simple guide. Remember that it takes less than 10 seconds for the critical eye to determine whether your résumé qualifies for careful reading, so it never hurts to optimize its appeal.
Set Up Your Résumé Specifically for the Position You’re Applying For
Look at it this way: you are trying to sell your service to this company through this document, so this is your opportunity to show your best face to the contractor, the one that will make them understand that you are the perfect match for the position.
Paying attention to the repeated words, keywords, and company’s core values and including them in your résumé will give the impression that you are aligned with the company’s objectives and that you were interested in researching them. Therefore, you are committed to getting the job.
Put Your Name and Contact Information at the Top
The reader’s attention will be located immediately there, so placing your most important information, which corresponds to your identity, in this place will make your name and data more accessible to remember.
What Information Should You Write?
Keep it simple—only what is essential. This way, you will avoid tiring the reader’s eyes and ensure that the message reaches its receiver more effectively.
- Your name in striking typography
- Your address, phone number, and email
Add A Brief Description of Yourself (no more than 30 words)
In this description, it’s advisable to give a short presentation and then describe your general and specific objectives in keywords. The faster and with fewer words you can communicate, the better. In addition to your goals, you can mention your abilities and skills so that the employer can get an idea of your main strengths.
Only Include Relevant Work Experience
If you have great experience in different fields, try to include in your CV only what is related or relevant to this job position you want. Résumés are a summary of the essential data of your working career. For the same reason, it should highlight the important things that speak best about you as a professional.
Educational Information Order
If you graduated years ago and have significant work experience, you should include your educational information at the end of your résumé in the shortest possible way since you want the attention to be directed mainly to the work you have done.
On the other hand, if you have just graduated and your work experience is minimal, you should place it at the top, thus focusing more attention on your current strengths.
Be Creative With Your Template
The aesthetic character of your résumé is as important as the textual content. Nowadays, it’s all about how attractive it is to look at; whether they read it or not will depend on this. Or even other superficial judgments based on your résumé’s image, such as your level of professionalism and how up-to-date you are in terms of trends.
Today, there are many inspiring designs that you can recreate and customize for free and for a fee to make your CV look more modern and professional. Of course, adapting it to the industry you belong to and the company for which you seek to apply.
Remember, the most important thing is to make it pleasing to the eye.
Finally, we want to recommend two even simpler and faster things that can still bring you closer to that dream position:
- Organize absolutely all the information chronologically
- Do not send references unless they have been requested
